Battle of the Bases

So after months of coating my nails with one layer of polish after the next, my nails are beginning to rebel. Cracking, peeling you name it. But having returned from uni for the year and raided my mum's dresser (shhhh don't tell her ;) I stumbled across these little beauties...

First up is O.P.I's Avoplex Nail and Cuticle Replenishing Oil which though technically not a nail base, managed to squeeze its way into this post as a good first step when trying to strengthen your nails. I massage it into my nails and cuticles before applying the base and then buff it off with a cotton pad. It's on sale on amazon at the moment for just over £5 which is a steal considering that I've used it gazillions of times and still haven't made a dent into the hefty 15ml bottle. So whilst not vying for a spot as Base Boss, I thought it deserved a mention.

So, first in the ring and packing a punch for the cuticle crown is Start to Finish base coat, top coat and nail strengthener by O.P.I. As the photo may indicate, I'm quite the fan. Whilst I'd only rate this as okay as a top coat and meh as a nail strengthener, it works fantastically as a base coat (and seeing as this is Battle of the Bases it makes quite the competitor).

Yet having such fickle fingertips, after trying out Sally Hansen's Double Duty strengthening base and top coat, my allegiance may just have changed. In terms of strengthening it was noticeably the more superior of the two, as a top coat it provides the glossiest finish and as a base it creates a lovely smooth surface to apply my polish of choice too.

Therefore I think all three rounds go to Sal in the blue corner.
